We put kids in saddles
The members of Rose Bowl Riders (RBR) formed Rose Bowl Riders Charitable Organization (RBRCO) in 2011. Our goal was—and is—to fund programs that bring horses and people together. We welcome donations year-round and hold a silent auction at the Horses in the Arroyo Play Day each fall.
Horses make great teachers
RBRCO partners with RBR to operate Horsemanship 101, a life-changing program for at-risk youngsters and those who are underserved or have special needs. Small groups of children from seven to 14 years of age spend several sessions with a riding instructor. Staff from the residential homes accompany the youth to the RBR stables where the children and teens meet the horses. They connect with them, learn from them, and love them.
A wonderful, healing relationship
Many of the children have never seen a horse close up, much less ridden one. Sitting on a gentle horse on their very first visit is a moment they always remember.
Horsemanship 101’s unique hands-on program teaches children how to brush, bridle, saddle, lead, and ride a horse. They learn mounting and dismounting, walking, trotting, cantering, and simple commands. These timeless lessons help youngsters learn to manage their own behavior and communicate more effectively.
A staff member at one residential facility told us: “Riding is an opportunity that these youth would never have and their behavior has changed for the positive. School grades are up and it gives them hope, raises self-esteem, and gives them something to look forward to. Riding at RBR is the highlight of their week.”
